Matthew Sommers, M.D. is an ophthalmologist at Scott & Christie Eyecare with specialized training in glaucoma and a strong foundation in both clinical research and community outreach. He earned his medical degree from the Robert Larner M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he also pursued a glaucoma fellowship.

Dr. Sommers has contributed to numerous research projects focused on improving access to glaucoma care, handheld tonometer technology, operating room efficiency, and international collaborations in urology and oncology research. His work spans institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, Southern Denmark University, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

In addition to his research background, Dr. Sommers is passionate about service-based care. He has volunteered with the Guerrilla Eye Service, Mission of Mercy, and similar outreach programs providing free eye care to underserved communities. He has also mentored pre-medical students and participated in public health education.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Sommers enjoys hiking, rock climbing, soccer, and baseball. His commitment to innovation and compassionate patient care continues to guide his practice at Scott & Christie Eyecare.
