In the United States, roughly 2,000 workers experience work-related eye injuries every day that need medical treatment. We often think eye injuries occur in labor related jobs such as animal-handling landscaping and construction. However, work-related eye injuries can also occur in an office setting, which is very unhealthy for your eyes. This is known as computer vision syndrome. It is very common among individuals who work in front of a computer screen consistently every day for eight or more hours. This can lead to irritability and fatigue. Symptoms of this syndrome include headaches, neck and back pain, dry eye and inattentiveness. Luckily, this can be prevented. Below are seven helpful tips to hinder eye injuries in the workplace.

Tips to Prevent Work-Related Eye Injuries:

Adjust your screen: One recommendation to help your eyes is to adjust your computer screen at a right angle and away from a direct light source. An anti-glare screen is also useful because it puts less strain on your eyes.

Stay Hydrated: It is important to drink enough water throughout the day particularly during the winter months because the dry air from furnaces and heaters make your eyes very dry.

Blink: Blink or close your eyes for a short period of time often to prevent you from getting dry eye.

Artificial tears: Using over-the-counter eye drops will help avoid your eyes from becoming very dry.

20-20-20 Rule: To help fight eyestrain, it is recommended to look 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

Eye Protection: If you work in a labor intensive field, it is pertinent that you wear safety goggles to prevent debris and shrapnel from getting into your eyes.

Schedule your yearly exam: It’s imperative to schedule a yearly routine eye exam. This way, you have a current prescription and can get help from an optometrist if you are experiencing any eye problems. Call to schedule your appointment today at one of our Good Looks Eyewear locations!
